Exhibition: year of Irena Sendler

Every year in Poland, the Polish Government chooses key people to celebrate, known as The Year Of … This year, at the museum, we are showcasing ‘The Year of Irena Sendler’, whose life was made famous in the film Life in a Jar.

Irena was a selfless nurse who saved Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto in World War 2.

Exhibition: year of Zbigniew Herbert’

Every year in Poland, the Polish Government chooses key people to celebrate, known as The Year Of …

Because this is a significant year, museum staff have chosen a second exhibition featuring a famous poet, ‘The Year of Zbigniew Herbert’.

He is well known for his words ‘No time to grieve for roses when the forests are burning’. A winner of over twenty literary awards, from the late 1960s, Herbert was one of the most serious contenders for the Nobel Prize for Literature.

His books have been translated into 38 languages.

Talk, Tour and Film ‘Poles Apart’ plus Wander the Galleries,

Hosted Visit, open to individuals and small groups: join our popular tour of the galleries. Hear an introductory talk and watch the film ‘Poles Apart’.

The programme will start at 1pm, with a look around the Lower Gallery, and follow with a talk starting at 1.15, then the film Poles Apart which is one hour, starting at 1.30pm with free time after the film to wander the exhibits and visit the Upper Gallery.

We will serve afternoon tea during the film. Price is $10 cash per person. Afternoon  tea / coffee / biscuits included.

Bookings not required.

‘Poles Apart’ (1 hour) tells the poignant story and background of 733 Polish children and 102 adults who came to live in Pahiatua, New Zealand, 1944. These survivors were forcibly deported from Poland to Russia during World War 2 then evacuated to Persia during a short amnesty. They eventually found a home in New Zealand.

Museum founder Mr John Roy-Wojceichowski is one of the children,

Teacher Only Session for the PHTM

In house lesson: Identity/Migration: Polish children arrive in 1944

You are warmly invited to a Teacher Only Session for the Learning Outside The Classroom, PHTM educational programme called Stefania For Schools based on the book Stefania’s Dancing Slippers by Jennifer Beck and illustrated by Lindy Fisher.

Primary / Intermediate teachers and home educators are invited to visit the Polish Museum for a presentation, in preparation for student visits in 2018 . Experience the ‘Stefania for Schools’ lesson called Identity/Migration: Polish children arrive in 1944 with slideshow, objects and artworks, linked to the NZ school curriculum.

These free sessions are also available on request at times and dates for your school team.

Celebrate a Polish Christmas workshop 2018

BOOKING RECOMMENDED

Starts at 2pm and runs for 2 hours till 4pm

Celebrate a Polish Christmas with paper and wool decorations.

  • Make wool spiders and paper chains with a twist for your own Christmas tree.
  • Create your own unique paper Christmas star to hang
  • Taste the Polish ginger biscuit called Pierniki
  • Learn some Christmas Eve traditions, watching the first star and Wigilia supper

This workshop is available for adults and/or children during the weeks leading to Christmas.

Every year in Poland, the Government chooses key people to celebrate, known as The Year Of

In 2019, we acknowledge ‘the year of Gustaw Herling-Grudziński’, one of the greatest 20th Century Polish writers.

The Government says: … stressing that the fate and work of this writer constitute ‘a testimony to the suffering and deeds of a man who endured a period of totalitarian violence and a crisis of values’.

2019 marks the 100th anniversary of Gustaw Herling-Grudziński’s birth on 20 May 1919 in Kielce, Poland.
